Now a resident of rural Midway, Alabama, Griffin also embraces the neo-Confederate movement—what he calls “Southern nationalism”—an ideology based on unabashed defense of the Confederacy and slavery, and open promotion of modern secession for Southern states, often associated with the white-supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens. In 2013, the movement’s leading organization, the League of the South, called Griffin one of its leading youthful organizers.

Griffin is also married to the daughter of the CCC’s founder, Gordon L. Baum, and his pieces have often appeared on the organization’s website. When Baum died in March 2015, Griffin wound up in charge of the group’s website, and it was widely assumed that he was also the heir-apparent to take the reins of the organization going forward.

In the alt-right’s formative years leading up to 2014, both Griffin and Spencer formed an alliance with another youthful white-nationalist organizer, Matthew Heimbach. Born in 1991, Heimbach had become involved in white nationalism when he was nineteen. As a student at Towson State in Maryland, he organized a campus chapter of the far-right Youth for Western Civilization, where he promoted activities such as chalking campus sidewalks with the words “White Pride” and “White Guilt Is Over”.

Like Griffin, Heimbach was heavily involved in the League of the South and often promoted that neo-Confederate flavor of white nationalism. He attended the LoS’s annual conferences in 2011, 2012, and 2013, and became friends with the league’s president, Michael Hill.

He also held forth on his racial views in the Youth for Western Civilization (YWC) newsletter, writing in 2013:

This is our home and our kith and kin. Borders matter, identity matters, blood matters, libertarians and their capitalism can move to Somalia if they want to live without rules, in the West we must have standards and enforce them. The “freedom” for other races to move freely into white nations is nonexistent. Stay in your own nations, we don’t want you here. Those who promote miscegenation, usury, or any other forms of racial suicide should be sent to re-education centers, not tolerated.
